Objectifs

Acquire/deepen knowledge in the field of medical and veterinary entomology, particularly

  • The biology and ecology of major species of medical and veterinary interest
  • The transmission of pathogens
  • Insecticide resistance
  • Alternative control methods

Public visé

Veterinarians, doctors, pharmacists, scientists, or anyone working in veterinary medical entomology

Target participants: EVPC and ACVM residents and diplomates, postgraduate (MSc, PhD) students, Post-Doc scientists, research fellows, entomologists, laboratory staff

Preferential rates :

  • for residents: €1260
  • for students: €540

Prérequis

Residents or diplomats specialized in parasitology, as well as holders of a Master's (MSc), a Doctorate (PhD), or those in post-doctoral positions, play a crucial role in research and advancing knowledge in this field. Scientists, entomologists, and associate researchers, along with veterinarians (DVM), often collaborate to study the complex interactions between parasites and their hosts. They are dedicated to understanding the life cycles of parasites, how they affect human and animal health, and developing effective control strategies. This multidisciplinary team also contributes to training new generations of researchers and improving public health policies.

Programme

This international One Health-oriented training (all courses will be conducted in English) involves French specialists (CIRADIRDInstitut Pasteur) and European experts (Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, Bristol University) in the field of medical and veterinary entomology and vector control.

The main topics covered are:

  • insecticide resistance
  • alternative control methods
  • transmission of pathogens
  • principles of laboratory breeding of key species of medical and veterinary interest insects
  • learning the morphological recognition of major genera and species of vectors of medical and veterinary importance
  • aspects of "geopolitics" (= geopolitics applied to tick-borne diseases)

Méthodes et modalités pédagogiques

Conferences are generally offered in the morning in an amphitheater and are open to staff of the ENVT.

Practical work, reserved for the 16 participants of the training, takes place in the afternoon and will cover vector identification, principles of their breeding in an insectarium, and principles of field capture.

Modalités d'évaluation et de suivi

Preparatory work and final examination
The attendees will receive a selection of papers covering the topics that will be developed during the course at least 15 days prior to the beginning of the summer school. The final examination will be made of 10 multiple choice questions and/or short answering questions. A course feedback questionnaire will be given at the beginning of the course to each participant and will be collected at the end of the course.
